Badlands art finds a permanent home in Medora
I've had a wonderful relationship with the Theodore Roosevelt Medora Foundation for many years -- ever since I first contacted them about partnering on my idea for a book for young people about the town of Medora, N. Dak.
I've always been interested in painting the beautiful scenery of our state, and the Badlands certainly are very different from the rolling prairies of the rest of the state. Writing and illustrating The Magic of Medora started me on a journey to create even more western North Dakota scenes.
As part of my show "Across the Burning Hills" at The Capital Gallery in Bismarck, I created a museum-quality exhibit of the illustrations that were done for the book. Combined with my other Badlands art, it became a wonderful testament to the natural beauty of that part of the state (which includes Theodore Roosevelt National Park), the rich history of the town of Medora, and the fabulous adventure destination it has become.
After the show concluded, I was honored to display my work at the State Capitol during the past legislative session, and then to have it on display in the downtown office of the Theodore Roosevelt Medora Foundation in 2025. That led to the Foundation asking if they could give my art a permanent home in Medora. My work with the Foundation has always been philanthropic in nature, so the question was easy to answer.
I am thrilled that my art will be hanging throughout Medora for many years, especially now with the opening of the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library and the greater awareness of "the magic of Medora" around the world.
